In this section, we will post answers to some frequently asked questions, and also give some guidelines regarding labor estimates for various maintenance and repair tasks. Please remember that estimating repair times is not an exact science, especially when dealing with cars that are at least 25 years old. Most E Types, for example, have been restored at least once since they left the factory. As a result certain mechanical components may be incorrectly installed, non original - or even missing altogether! No two E Types will be exactly alike. Different service shops, each of them equally reputable, will work at different speeds and may employ different methods when carrying out similar tasks. Where we have quoted a time for a given repair, it is merely our opinion of how long such repair would be likely to take in our own service department, using our preferred methods, and of course 'all things being equal'.
No allowance has been made for any restoration work that typically may be carried out at the same time as certain mechanical repairs. For example, customers often say 'while the engine is out go ahead and paint the frames and the firewall'. They mistakenly think that such a task would be easy (and therefore economical) to perform while the engine is out of the car. The fact is that such additional work can often add literally thousands of dollars to a labor bill. Take care when requesting any 'additional work' that you fully understand the extra cost involved. Unless specifically stated, the estimates we have provided in this section deal exclusively with the mechanical task at hand - restoration work brings into play an entirely new set of rules.
