1972 BMW 3.0 CSL

This beautiful Golf Yellow BMW 3.0 CSL has been part of the Team CJ fleet for the past four years. In that time it has been driven approximately 1,000 miles. Despite limited use, it has been extremely well maintained, including a thorough service within the last 50 miles. Most recently we have had the speedometer rebuilt and the door and quarter panel wood trim was refinished by Madera Concepts in California.

Chassis number 2275030 was supplied new in Switzerland and was retained by its first owner for 26 years. The car was then exported to the Unites States where it was acquired and partially restored by Jimmy Baker, a well known BMW CSL aficionado and E9 on-line forum member. In fact 2275030 was apparently one of ten CSLs that Mr. Baker had in his collection at the time. During the course of his restoration, Mr. Baker discovered that the cylinder head was cracked. Rather than attempt a repair he simply replaced it with an alternative CSL head. The engine block remains the original matching number engine. In 2006 the car was sold to another E9 forum member, Roger Beckham. Mr. Beckham kept the car for 12 years, before selling it to me in early 2018.

As the car was supplied new in Switzerland, Swiss regulations dictated that the door skins had to be steel, rather than aluminum. The bonnet and boot lid are both aluminum. The car is believed to have all of its original panels and is in extremely solid condition. In the photos below you will see that we went to the trouble of removing the outer sill covers to show the condition of the inner sills. Thankfully there was just minor surface rust lurking behind the covers, so we scuffed the surface rust and painted the resultant bare metal with Por-15. The floors are also in similarly solid condition. They are exactly as the car was delivered to me and we have done nothing to 'dress the underside up' in anticipation of the sale. The inner and upper front wheel wells (looking up at the shock towers) are in excellent condition - as clean as you are ever likely to find.

The CSL was apparently repainted in its original Golf Yellow color during Mr. Baker's restoration. The paint remains extremely presentable and what might be described as a 'very high quality driver' standard. A couple of minor flaws, including a barely perceptible run in the driver's door, prevent it from being truly 'show' quality. The chrome and brightwork is in good condition throughout the car. The original 'five hole' Alpinas are appropriately date coded and were refinished shortly after I purchased the car. We also installed a new set of Michelin XWX tires at that time. All panel gaps are excellent throughout the car, with fender, door and quarter light panels all lining up as they should. The driver's door latch is slightly temperamental and needs to be closed firmly.

Mechanically the car is in excellent condition and needs nothing. She runs and drives beautifully! The matching number engine starts easily, pulls strongly and runs cool in all traffic conditions. The suspension, steering and transmission are all in perfect working order. I wouldn't hesitate to take this car on an extended road trip.

The interior trim is in generally excellent condition. The original dash wood is very presentable and shows well. The door and quarter panel wood trim was cracking when I acquired the car, so I had it refinished by the experts at Madera Concepts. The seats were re-trimmed by the previous owner who went to great lengths to find the correct material in Germany. There is a small crack in the vinyl on the left side of the instrument binnacle (photographed below). The headliner is in excellent condition, as are all rubber seals throughout the car. The steering wheel is a correct, original, leather wrapped Petri, unique to the CSL cars.

In summary, I would describe our 1972 BMW CSL as an extremely solid, very high quality driver. Not quite a show car, but a car that could easily be brought up to that level. It does not have any of the serious rust problems often associated with these cars. It is mechanically excellent, shows beautifully, and is ready to be enjoyed by a lucky new owner!
