Special notes:

The cylinder head was badly corroded and the combustion domes were pitted. The head needed significant welding and also required straightening as it was off by 0.18" one end to the other. The deck of the block also needed some significant welding before being resurfaced.

 
Measured Cubic Capacity:

3,815 cc

Compression:

9.227:1 with 0.040" thick competition cylinder head gasket

 
Pistons:

A&E spin cast, 0.020" oversized
27.36 cc piston dome

Skirt clearance:

1 = 0.004"
2 = 0.004"
3 = 0.004"
4 = 0.004"
5 = 0.004"
6 = 0.004"

Rods:

Fully reconditioned XJ wide blade rods, ARP rod bolts and nuts torqued to 55 ft/lbs with 30 weight oil on threads.

Sleeves:

New stepped sleeves throughout

Crankshaft/block:

Main bearings @ 0.010"
Rod bearings @ 0.010"
Front main seal - upgraded to Teflon
Main bearing lock washers upgraded to ARP
New high output Rob Beere oil pump

Cylinder head:

WAD camshafts
Set on OEM cam timing marks
Uprated springs (nominally 95lb)
Spring pressure - closed 85 lbs, open (0.40 lift) 180 lbs
Lobe lift (Int & Ex) - 0.436"
Running duration (Int & Ex) - 261 degrees
Duration @ 0.50" tappet height - 215 degrees
All new intake and exhaust seats installed (0.005" interference fit)
All new silicon bronze guides
Valve stem to guide clearance: Int 0.0014 to 0.0015", Ex 0.0015 to 0.0016"
Cyl head cc = 98 cc
All new valves (Int = 1.870" Ex = 1.625")
Intake valves have seals retro fitted
All new (later style) keepers, split collets and spring retainers on intake side
Valve lash (0.010" intake, 0.010" exhaust)
Tappets are new OE
NGK BPRE5 spark plugs set at 0.025"

Shim allocation as follows:

(Intake) #1 .100" #2 .103" #3 .097" #4 .093" #5 .089" #6 .085"
(Exhaust) #1 .118" #2 .122" #3 .130" #4 .127" #5 .124" #6 .131"

Head studs:

ARP (uprated) torqued to 60 ft/lbs with 30 weight oil on threads. Hylomar on lower threads where studs installed in block at 27 ft/lbs. After initial running, allow to fully cool overnight, then re-torque head nuts to 60 ft/lbs. After 500 to 1,000 miles, re-torque head to 60 ft/lbs.
